Buddhist, Islamic, Taoist - Common Beliefs

Buddhism
Three Doors to Liberty

  1. Emptiness: We are interconnect with one another and empty of a separate self.
  2. Signlessness: We don't have a permanent form, but we change into various forms. Just as water can become a cloud, and a cloud can become snow and snow becomes water again, the same is true for people.
  3. Nonattainment or aimlessness: Do not put something in front of you and chase after it. Being a real human being enables you to contribute to the beauty of the world, rather than trying to be someone else.

Islam
Five Pillars of Islam
  1. The testimony of faith: Muslims believe there is only one God and He alone should be worshiped.
  2. Prayer: Prayers are performed five times a day, creating a direct link with God.
  3. Giving Zakat (support of the needy): Muslims believe that all things come from God, and money should be given to those from other classes who are in need of it.
  4. Fasting the month of Ramadan: Muslims fast from down until sundown, abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations. It is seen as a time of spiritual cleansing.
  5. The Pilgrimage to Mecca: Muslims believe that they have the  obligation in their lifetime, if they are physically and financially able.

    Taoism

    1. Tao is the first-cause of the Universe. It is a force that flows through all life.
    2. Each believer's goal is to become one with the Tao.
    3. Time is cyclical, not linear as in Western thinking.
    4. Yin and yang symbolize pairs of opposites which are seen throughout the universe.
    5. One must nurture the Ch'i (air, breath) that has been given to them.
    6. Development of virtue is one's chief task. The Three Jewels to be sought are compassion, moderation, and humility.
    7. One is kind to other individuals, largely because such an actions tends to be reciprocated.
